Off-screen with Dawn Chapman

For November, I reach across the Atlantic Ocean again, this time to welcome Dawn Chapman, author of The Secret King series and Director of TSK Productions Ltd.

dawnchapmanDawn Chapman has been creating sci-fi and fantasy stories for thirty years. Until 2005 when her life and attention turned to scripts, and she started work on The Secret King, a 13-episode sci-fi TV series, with great passion for this medium.

In 2010, Dawn returned to her first love of prose. She’s been working with coach EJ Runyon who’s encouraged her away from fast paced script writing, to revel in the world of TSK and Letháo as an epic prose space journey.

JR: Tell us a little about your journey. What’s the story life of The Secret King?

Dawn: Over the years I’ve written quite a lot. As a scriptwriter first, I learned with First Take and had the opportunity to produce and then formed my own small company to produce my own short film back in 2005.

It was in filming that I began to work on TSK and found other friends and sources, optioning a few scripts. Some of those went to production, others didn’t. And, of course, more recently to aiding with script consultation around the world. This is all what led me where I am now.

JR: Is it weird that the word options makes me feel a little dizzy with excitement? Anyway! When did you decide to become a writer?

baby-proofing-the-future-ccDawn: I never decided to become a writer; I already was and am a writer. If I could have had a pen attached at birth, believe me, I would have.

JR: That might’ve made the birth canal awkward to navigate! O.o…

Are there any marketing techniques that have had an immediate impact on your sales so far?

aonise_exodusDawn: Unfortunately not, so far regular blogging and our audiobook launch have been the best sales tactic we’ve had. I’ve paid out for a lot of services in the last year, and only a few have proven fruitful.

JR: **scribbles on To Do list: REGULAR BLOGGING**

What are you currently working on and what is it about?

book_thumbDawn: I manage a lot, and that means juggling. I have a few projects which are in various stages of completion for TSK. transparent

TSK’s second book – First Contact – Where the Aonise negotiate and begin to settle on Earth, a difficult and perilous task.

Tales from The Secret King – An illustrated Anthology of short snippets into TSK’s characters’ lives before the first book (Lethao).

Lethao. This has been a joy because seeing your writing and other people’s writing come to life in art is amazing. I love this novel.

Consor – a far futuristic space opera. This is a little different for me, because it involves one of my main character’s daughters, who snuck up on me one day and begged me to start her story.

JR: Sneaky characters are the best. What part of your writing time do you devote to marketing your book?

Dawn: I use Karina for a lot of this, but I also use Twitter and Facebook to keep in touch with things, so I do a lot of that myself, too.

JR: I look forward to seeing what comes next!
